If you want to train with and be part of the team, it's super convenient if you are also a member of Quantico Shooting Club. Either way, to get on base you'll need to fill out some paperwork. If you choose not to join, you get to fill it out every year. Here's the latest notice from QSC:
I am asking that you please redo the vetting documentation so that we are in compliance. The base stated that they do not delete the members however, the form itself does not show who is a member or a guest. I wish to be sure that we are compliant. If you have already done this you do not need to do it again. Thank you.

Shooting consistently good standing is a matter of rounds down range, with thoughtfully executed goal.

But first, your hold will determine the success you will have.

#1 your hold has to be 10 ring to shoot 10’s. This means that there should be a reasonable amount of time (enough to get a shot off) that your sights are within your best hold. No attention should be paid to the sight when they are not in the middle, it’s wasted energy. My best hold is within 5 seconds after I first look though my sights. I’m ready to shoot the shot at that time. If the gun don’t stop I don’t shoot…I start over.

#2 the shot has to be executed with the gun sitting still within your hold. If the gun is moving…it’s most likely moving out, and you've missed the best part of your hold.

#3 recognizing that the gun is sitting still and within your hold, with lots of training (dry fire or live fire) will initiate you firing the shot. It’s not subconscious to me, but it’s close.

#4 don’t disturb the gun when you shoot the shot. That being said, I don’t believe in ball and dummy rounds drills and being surprised when the shot goes off. I consciously shoot every shot. Sometimes they are a mistake and I over-hold, but the more I train the less of these I get. If I get a dud round my gun will dip. This is very noticeable to me when shooting pistol. I can shoot bullet holes at 25 yds, but if I’ve miscounted the rounds I’ve fired out of my magazine, my pistol will dip noticeably…so do the pistols of the best pistol shooters I’ve watched and shot with. One might call this a “jerk”, I call it “controlled aggressive execution…executed consistently” . I don't believe you can learn to ignore recoil. You must be consistent in your reaction to it.

#5 know your hold and shoot within it. The best part of my hold is about 4 inches. When I get things rolling I recognize a still gun within my hold and execute the shot. I train to do this every shot. Close 10’s are acceptable Mid-ring 10’s are not. If my hold was 8-inches I would train the same way. Shoot the shot when it is still within the hold, and accept the occasional 9 but not accepting the shots out of my hold.

#6 rounds down range. I shudder to think the amount of rounds I've fired standing in my life, and it still takes a month of shooting standing before Perry to be in my comfort zone. That month before Perry I shoot about 2000 rounds standing, 22 shots at a time. It peaks me at just about the right time.

This is a picture to what I believe it takes to shoot good standings. I hope it gives some insight, understanding, and a roadmap to your own success shooting standing.

Good Shooting,
Carl

For the first day (9/21) I got up at 5am, ate a bowl of oatmeal, and drove the 2 1/2 hours to warrior mountain. I was on relay 3, so I went to the pits first, and fired standing 3rd. I ate a sandwich in the pits, but I got hungry with low blood sugar about 5 shots in to standing. I was a bit of a wobbly mess, so I did not do very well standing that day. I did have a nice sitting score.
Rapid prone, I wasn't sure if my elevation should be 23 or 20. I went with 23, right 2 plus a little left for the wind, and ended up with a good group high left. The next string I went down to 20, and was centered low. Go figure.
I got rained on in slow prone, and that caused some problems. Actually, for the first couple of shots, the rain helped me focus on the front sight, and I shot x's. After that, the gun got slippery, and I had a hard time getting a good cheek weld, and holding position. In the end, I did at least shoot my classification.

The second day (9/22) was the EIC match. I slept in a nearby hotel (7 C's Lodge, pretty nice), and only had a 20 min drive to the range. Nonetheless, I just felt crappy that morning. I'm not sure why.
So I'm relay 2, so I'm shooting 2nd (which I prefer). When I mounted the rifle for the first shot, it was all over the target. At that point, I should have taken the rifle down and started over, but instead, I shot a miss. That's right, my very first shot was a miss, and I knew it as soon as I pulled the trigger. I figured my day was pretty much over, but I kept it together and finished standing with an 82. I really do need to write down a shot plan for standing. It needs to include finding my balance in my feet, relaxing my legs, and relaxing my upper body, shoulder, and arms. I need to practice at least 22 rounds a day.

Sitting, I had a good position, and not to much pulse. I took it one shot at a time--breath, front sight, squeeze-- and shot a 98.

Rapid prone, I had a pretty good position. My goal was to break every shot in the X, and get a nice small group so that I could confirm my zero. I ended up with a good group, but a little too much to the left on the 9-10 line, netting me a 96. Which means I'm going to 600 down 24 points. That's not actually too bad, but it doesn't leave much room for error.

Then, I had a phenomenal stage and string in slow prone. For the first string, I really wanted to try to break clean shots, so that I could adjust my zero as needed. I decided to be brave about spinning the knobs as long as I broke a good shot. I helped to focus on each shot, and keeping focus on the front sight while I squeezed the trigger. The second string in particular I took shot by shot. I finished with a 92 and a 99, for a stage total of 191--personal bests for string and stage. As a result, I have the beginnings of a shot plan for slow prone. Roll left, place rifle in shoulder (high), establish cheek weld with nose in charging handle, roll right and place right elbow, lift and reestablish cheek weld. While looking at grass, relax left arm, relax shoulders. Breath, sight picture, front sight focus. I also have a new no wind zero (NWZ): Right four clicks. I started and ended with the same elevation, with a little fiddling in between.

I ended up with a 467, which I knew was good-- and gave me hope of getting EIC points -- But I hadn't realized that that was a person best for a National Match Course. I ended up 5th, 5 points and a few X's out of the money. In other words, if that first shot had been just a six instead of a miss, I would have finished 3rd, taking home a bronze and 6 points. As it was, I didn't even get first leather. Still, lesson learned: never give up.
Other lesson learned: if my wobble zone is the whole target board, take the rifle down and start over.

After shooting the Maryland State Service Rifle Championships at Ft. Hill/Warrior Mountain, I need to update my personal bests, and goals (new PBs in bold):
I'm a very long shot for the P100. If I have a really good day, it's possible, but mostly I shoot it to prepare for the Individual and Team matches. Also, it's a match, and having fun shooting matches is the whole point.

The match is just three stages: 10 shots standing (offhand) at 200 yards in 10 minutes; 10 shots prone at 300 yards in 70 seconds (rapid prone); and 10 shots prone at 600 yards in 10 minutes (slow prone).

I shot on relay 6, which means I went to the pits first, shot 3rd after the pit change at 200 and 300, scored at 300 and 600, and then I could shoot and scoot at 600.

Offhand: I tend to be either good or bad on this stage. If I get in a steady position, with a good natural point of aim (NPA) I can do really well. If something is off, it can be a challenge. I was having a good string. I wasn't 100% solid, but I had a good NPA. I was hitting 9s and 10s, although I couldn't seem to find the X ring. The last shot of the string was solid, I broke the shot right in the middle, and it came up the elusive X...on the target next to mine. I had cross fired, earning myself a big fat 0 for that shot, and finished with an 83. Even if I didn't drop any more points, I was out of the 100.

Rapid Prone: The wind at 300 was blowing pretty good. I estimated 8mph out of 7:00, so I put on 1.75 minutes of left wind. That was not quite enough, and I lost points out to the right, finishing with a respectable, but not great, 95.

Slow prone: There are two great challenges to shooting at 600 yards. The first is that the target is unforgiving. The X ring is just 6" ( 1 minutes of angle) across, so every little thing counts. Your position has to be solid, and consistent with a good NPA. You also have to keep a laser focus on the front sight, but still be seeing the target well. The other factor is wind. If you don't correct for it, or make the wrong correction, the wind can blow you completely off the target. I struggle a little bit with the first part, and the wind was tough. I estimated the predominant condition to be about 10mph, and variable. I put on 4.5 minutes right, and shot a 7 at 10 o'clock. I figured some of that was me, so I only put another minute right on the gun, and fired. The score keeper called out, "eight, dumb-ass." OK, the "dumb-ass" was implied, but you could hear it in his voice. I put another minute right on the gun, and the next shot came up a 10. From there, I did my best to read the wind, and chased the spotter a little bit.

My off-hand was much improved. I did not do as well as normal in the rapids. Slow prone was a little improved. If I can maintain my slow scores,
I need to work on improving my rapids so that I can regularly shoot 98+, that get's me to the 480s.
Fun Match; Personal BestsAt this months Fairfax Rod and Gun club "Fun Match," I shot a personal best 761-17x for the match, my first Master level score. Extracting stages of a National Match Course, this would be a 471, also a personal best. I also had personal bests in standing, sitting, and rapid prone.

I shot the first relay on target points 14 and 15, paired with Greg Spitzer. These TPs have the targets in the shade through sitting, with dappled light in prone when the sun was out. It was partly cloudy. I was shooting using my new short hood and .46 aperture, Creedmoor 50 coat, and a web sling. First shot was at 0900, and we shot until we finished all stages.

Standing

I fired a personal best tying 95-2x in the first string, and a personal best 186-3x for the stage. The ground is flatter and more even than Quantico or Perry (no grass), but I still ended up with my feet closer together than normal to find a good spot. Rear foot was still tilted back a little.

Success Analysis

The first string seemed easy. I had a good NPA. I consistently placed the buttstock in the same place, with the toe just inside the humeral head, near the top. I brought the rifle down and set-up, feeling my position, before looking trough the sights (thank you, Olympics). I also shot with a relaxed diaphragm (thank you, Jeter). The larger aperture allowed more light, which seemed to make it easier to focus on the front sight.

Solutions Analysis

I'm looking for a solution to fatigue and loss of focus during the last 5 shots of a 20 shot offhand string. I think the problem was aggravated by trying to record my own score, and keep score for my partner.

Sitting

I fired a personal best 5x clean on the first string, and finished the stage with 200-9x, my first double clean sitting.

Success Analysis

Felt easy. I kept a front site focus, I took a breath on each shot, and exhaled relaxing the diaphragm each shot. I called a couple of shots high and low, but all were in the 10 ring.

Solutions Analysis

I'm looking for a solution to my magazine hitting my sling. I think I need to get my sling higher on my arm, and more outboard.

Rapid Prone

I fired a personal best 196-2x for the stage.

Slow Prone

We were pair firing and scoring, which meant I had to break position to record Greg's scores between shots.

Success Analysis

I kept Greg's scores in my head if it was an X or 10. I wrote it down and forgot about it if it was anything else. I shot a reasonable score on the first string. I finished the stage with three 10s, and three Xs.

Solutions Analysis

I am looking for a solution to getting myself into a stable prone position, with a good NPA; and keeping or getting myself back into a the same position through the stage. A stable prone position allows me to relax my left arm and hand, and right shoulder. It also allows me to get on target without muscling the gun.

a half low for some reason. The targets were backlit, and it was overcast, so
it might have been the light. Some people say you just shoot high at Perry
because of having blue-sky instead of a berm and the targets are high relative
to the shooting positions. Who knows? Anyway, at 600, there was some wind, and
I shot at the low end of my normal range (88) for a total of 267-- which put me

blowing like hell. It looked like a storm was blowing in, so we didn't know if
we were going to shoot, or how we were going to shoot. By the time we started,
though, it had blown past us and turned into a nice morning. I started off
AWESOME in off-hand: 10, 10, 10, (this is easy!) 9, (Ok, I still have to focus)
10, 7 ( WTF?), black (I can't see!). My aperture had come loose, and was
flopping around in the hood. I got the aperture out of the hood, and figured I
didn't have time to try to get it back in, so I kept shooting. I actually could
see the target OK, but I didn't really get back into my zone, so I ended up
with an 85. (so I dropped 4 points with the first 6 rounds, and 11 points with
the last 4 rounds. There was a pair of 6s in there somewhere. Ok, 85 is not

good: Bang, bang. Reload. Bang,

for some reason. I had time. When the targets went down, I looked at my bolt.
It was, strangely, closed. And when I opened it, there was a bullet inside.
Fuck. It came up an 88, with a saved round. I figure I need a 470 to make the

that there was about a minute of wind from the left. Now I have to decide if I
was low Monday because of the light, or because "It's Perry." I
decide it was mostly the light, so I just use my normal zero. I shoot a nice

and shoot another one right next to it. I'd finally change the sites, and the

only have a good starting wind call, but a good idea on how to read the changes

Those first two matches put me on a different level. I had been shooting low expert scores before (450), and both of my first two matches were pushing 470. To my mind, around 470 you are in the hunt for EIC leg points.
After Match 3, I thought there was a good chance that I would finish 3rd. I was already 5th, and when I shot a 456 in the last match, I figured I would pass two of the guys in front of me, and only Jeff and Tom would finish ahead of me. I did pass those two shooters, but John Eckenrode made up his missing match 3, and James LeCroy had an outstanding match 4 to come out of nowhere and pass me by one point.
I shot an 800 agg saturday, and the EIC match Sunday the 2012

In the 800, I finished 13 out of 55 Expert; 71 out of 173 overall.
Standing 182 - 2 -- Xs and 8s.
Sitting 194 - 4
R. Prone 195 - 7 -- Includes my first Rapid Prone clean on the second string.
S. Prone 179 - 1
Total 750 - 14 -- 93.75%, two points shy of a Master score.

In the EIC match
60 out of 112
McGinnes, Michael (147246)
Standing 88 - 0 -- Not great, but if I shoot the other stages really well, I'm still alive. Down 12, I figured I could drop another 14.
Sitting 94 - 1 -- Ok, and not the end of the world. Down 18, leaving 7.
R. Prone 95 - 2 -- Never give up! Down 23, I just have to shoot a great prone. I can do it.
S. Prone 171 - 3 -- I forgot to change elevation, so the first shot went into the dirt.
Total 448 - 6 -- The last leg went for a relatively high 475-10x.
Without putting a shot in the dirt, I would have finished around 45th.
Not my best target, but fun. It was up in the carrier when he took the shot, so I used Photoshop to correct the perspective.

In the first match, I shot my first clean Sitting (or clean anything else for that matter), along with a 182 (92,90) standing to finish with a personal best 469-9x. That's one point shy of a Master class score, and in the neighborhood to earn some leg points toward going distinguished.
Second match was 3/25, and I shot a personal best 94-1x standing on the first string, and a 91 on the second string for 185-1x standing. On the first string I started off with something like five 10s in a row. I tried to stay focused on one shot at a time, but my head got the better of me, and I dropped two 8s and two 9s in the next five shots. I had a lot of pulse sitting, and ended with a 98-3x sitting, and a 98-1 rapid prone. I need to focus on position consistency in slow prone, and see if I can tighten my groups vertically. I was shooting with 19 clicks of elevation, and I think 21 clicks would have better centered my group and gotten another point.

This should update every day. Yes, I'm a big nerd. I found out you could get weather XML data out of Wunderground, and into a Excel or a Google spreadsheet. Google spreadsheets will let you share easily, but I can't make it do a 'wind rose.' You kind of need a pivot table/chart to do that. Easy in Excel, but not Google docs.
For your entertainment, the spreadsheet is below.

The chart is the right windage in MOA one should have to put on one's sights shooting 69gr. SMKs at Perry. The weather xml gives wind direction in degrees. Just take the TAN wind direction in radians, and it gives you the wind percentage. Multiply by windspeed, and you get the effective cross-wind speed. From there, it's proportional.

Unfortunately, this version of Wondergrounds API no longer works.

Never give up, even if you think you're ahead. I was sure I had first place Sharp Shooter in the bag. I was 8 points ahead of the guy in second. What I didn't figure was that he only had to shoot a 452 in match 4 to drop his low of 443, and pass me by one point. Which is what he did. Meanwhile, I had rifle problem* in match 4, and decided I could just call it a day, which would drop Match 4 as my low score.
In fairness to myself, I didn't realize I could have continued, and even if I had, I don't think I would have had time to shoot a full standing string.

*My buffer tube had backed out enough for the buffer retainer pin to come out and block up my action. It turns out you can shoot an AR without a buffer retainer pin, but you do have to get it out of your action.
This seems to be my regular position. I came third unclassified, 7 points out behind the winner, and 2-x out of second. The first match would have been my low match even if I hadn't cross-fired, so it didn't make any difference in the league results.

I'm pretty sure my score keeper made a mistake adding my results for match 3, recording a 440 instead of a 450. If that's correct, I will finish 1st unclassified with a total of 1357-17x. If I had been classified, I would have placed 5th/15 in Marksman, 2nd/4 Sharpshooter, or 9th/12 Expert.

Here's the funny part. I shot (just barely) Expert. That's assuming the 450 is correct, and OK, 9 of those shots were on the wrong target. If I really did shoot a 440, AND/OR you don't count my crossfires, I'm a Sharpshooter. The NRA is not going to count my crossfires (and why would they?), so I guess I'm a Sharpshooter.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7995841.post-38094499198465732572010-04-13T19:48:00.002-04:002010-04-13T19:48:26.254-04:002010 Service/Match Rifle MCB Quantico Schedule
2010 Service/Match Rifle MCB Quantico Schedule

13/14 Feb QSC Sat. 800 ag Sunday 3x600

13/14 March VFEMI Garand Matches

10/11 April QSC Sat. 800ag Sunday 3x600

15/16 May VFEMI Quantico 800 ag Championships

21/23 May VFEMI Virginia State Championships

12/13 June QSC Sat. 800ag Sunday 3x600

10/11 July VFEMI Quantico 800 ag Championships

16/18 July VFEMI Regional Championships

11/12 Sept VFEMI Garand Matches

9/10 Oct QSC Sat. 800ag Sunday 3x600

13/14 Nov QSC Sat. 800ag Sunday 3x600

PLEASE CONTACT MATCH DIRECTORS

QSC XTC Match Director JJ O’Shea jjoshea@msn.com

VFEMI Match Director Jim Morgan xmorgan@hotmail.com

This schedule does not include Palma, Full bore, Long Range, benchrest, or F Class. I ended up with a total of 458 in the 500 aggregate, which is an 'expert' score. That's a personal best, so we'll see if I can keep it up there for the next couple of matches.

The biggest improvement in terms of points came in Standing. I shot a 176-1x, which is 7 points higher than my previous personal best. I think I owe some of that to the team fire format (44 minutes for 2 shooters, alternating fire) that gives a good minute of rest between shots. I did find that I was standing with my feet too far apart, which was making me unstable, and giving me cramps in my hips.

For rapid sitting, I had a lot of time to find a good position, so I found my NPA, and a fairly settled, although not completely solid position. I was shocked to find I shot a personal best 98-4x. I'm going to try and loosen the sling some more, and move my hand toward the receiver to see if I can get a solid position. This is based on advice I got from a high-master about shooting prone.

I'm pretty tall, so the length of pull on a A2 is too short for me. In a really comfortable position, with my had at the front swivel, my eyeball is in inch in front of the rear sight. So, I asked someone if there was a way for me to increase the LOP in Service Rifle. His first piece of advice was to move the buttstock closer to my face, and higher on my chest. This should give me a more upright head position, and move my face back from the front sight. I tried it on Rapid Prone, but had a hard time getting it settled in there, and came away with a good score of 91-1x.

After watching me shoot rapid prone, he basically told me to bring my left hand toward the receiver and loosen up the sling. I had been trying to keep my left had at the swivel, and make it tight enough to press firmly into my shoulder, al a David Tubb. It just doesn't work for me. I'm also going to have to go back to using to adhesive to keep my hand in place.
He also told me I should keep my wrist straight, bend my right leg, and shift my hips to adjust my NPA for each shot, but keep my left elbow planted. I loosened the sling one hole from #0 to #1. After the stage was over, he had me loosen it more, and it ended up on the last hole (#4?) before I got a good position that didn't move in dry-fire.

So, Slow Prone I think I shot a personal best 93, and the last 4-5 shots were all Xs and 10s, but I didn't get a chance to completely record my results. I need my own score keeper :-)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7995841.post-55202739706627726922010-03-27T22:20:00.001-04:002010-03-28T09:58:52.774-04:00FRGC March 27th Service Rifle MatchI finally got the new Ron Brown sling, and the problem I was having with the sling sliding down my arm went away. Yeah!

I shot first service rifle match at Fairfax Rod and Gun Club this morning. Sign-up time was 8AM, ugh. I very nearly overslept, but managed to make it on time. The weather was cold, about 32 degrees when I got out of the car at 8, but it was clear and bright with very little wind. I ended up waiting until the second rely to shoot, so the light was behind me a little more than during the 1st rely.

Since I had never fired at 200 yards, the first question was, what's my zero? I ran the JBM Ballistics calculator the night before, and it said to come up about a minute and a half (5-6 clicks). When I got the the range, I ran in to Bob Reynolds, and he recommended coming up 2 minutes. Apparently, there is a rule of thumb that says 2 for 2, 3 for 3, something, something. That's, come up 2 MOA from 100 to 200, and then come up 3 MOA from 200 to 300. I ended up using 1.5 MOA (6 clicks) for standing, 8 clicks for sitting, and 6 clicks for prone. I honestly can't say right now which adjustment was 'correct,' although I'm thinking 8 clicks would have been better.

Slow Standing.
Alas, a new sling doesn't help with standing, and my shooting was perfectly in line with my previous efforts. I tend to do really well at the beginning, but I start to degrade as I go. Part of this is fatigue, part of it is taking too much time at the beginning and having to rush at the end. I actually ate into my partner's shooting time, but he was able to finish with seconds to spare on a 44 minute stage. The first string was an 85, and the second a 75, for a total of 160. I see a pattern of parallel horizontal strings above and below the black. At least part of the problem is inconsistant sight picture. Sometimes I shooting at a line of white, and sometimes I'm shooting into the black at 6 O'clock. I can also feel it in my back, so I know I need build some core strength.

Rapid Sitting,
My first sighter was at 6'Oclock, in the 8 ring, so I came up 2 clicks (I think), and hit the second shot in almost the exact same spot. Hmmm. For the rest of the stage, I held in the black, and came out with a good group a little low left. Even though the group was low-left, I still hit mostly 9s and 10s for a total of 92.

Rapid Prone,
I wasn't exactly sure what I had done on my sites during sitting rapid, so I dialed it back to 6 clicks above my 100yd zero. My first shot was a low right 8. The rest went in to my neighbors target, and his worst 10 hits were a total of 92. So, I worst, I shot a 90. All I'll say is, it's not my fault! For rapids in general, I need to take one shot per breath, rather than trying to hold my breath for more than one shot.

Slow Prone,
This is where the new sling really paid off. That thing hung to my arm like a python, and didn't go anywhere. I kept the elevation at +6, and I also think I was holding a little into the black at 6 O'clock, instead of my more usual line of white. I felt much more comfortable and shot one of my best groups and scores. I didn't really record what I did (too much going on), but I seem to recall the group being a little low right, but I still managed a 91. That's the best slow prone I have recorded. I picked up a tip that I need to roll the stock into my cheek before I put my elbow down. This is basically what I've been doing standing. I also got confirmation that I need to keep my left arm as far under the rifle as I can during prone.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7995841.post-39678566131627214592010-03-15T09:45:00.000-04:002010-03-15T09:45:47.173-04:00CMP Practice.Standing

I actually managed to find a clear, warm day to go practice last week. The wind was calm; the sun was bright; the temperature perfect. I started with Standing practice. The good news is I can call my shots. It was nice to see the holes appear where I thought they would. I only got off 15 rounds during the shooting period, but they were mostly 8s, 9s, and 10s. The first shots seemed to be the best. As I shot, I was getting fatigued, and it was harder to settle the rifle. I guess I better get a little more exercise.

Sitting

Next came rapid sitting. It took me awhile to find a good position. If the I had a good head position on the stock, the rifle was pointed at the ground. If the rifle was pointed at the target, I couldn't get my head on the rifle, or my eyeball was in front of the rear sight. I finally got a good crossed ankle position, and shot a pretty good group (96-3x). Part of the solution was choking up on the front stock to bring the sights up to the target. I got a 1" stock spacer coming from Midway which should help get the rear sight away from my eye. I'm also getting a Ron Brown sling from Creedmoor, which I hope will help keep the sling in place.

Prone

I didn't really have the heart (or daylight) to shoot a slow prone string. I just didn't feel like messing with my sling again. The damn thing always works its way down my arm as I reach for single rounds. Therefore, I decided to shoot "Rattle Battle."

I shot my own 100yd version of Rattle Battle, with a 600yd target reduced for 100yds. The official stage is as many rounds as you can shoot in 50 seconds. I only had one loaded magazine, so I just shot that about as fast as I could. I'm pretty sure I was under 30 seconds. So, shooting 30 rounds in 30 seconds, I got 28 hits on a target that's a little over 3-inches wide at 100 yards. Not bad.
In prone my group is about 1.5 MOA lower. I can come up 6 clicks to center the group, but the group is much wider. Even though I've got a nose weld on the bench and in prone, my eye seems to be much closer to the rear sight in prone. I think my prone position needs some work. I can't seem to find a spot for the butt that feels solid, and has the rifle pointed at the target instead of the ground.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7995841.post-8678114929371119872009-10-01T20:49:00.014-04:002009-10-01T22:24:28.828-04:00The Importance of BrassI've been shooting Service Rifle for a little bit now, and I haven't paid too much attention to my ammo. My first groups with the 69s were not any better than the 55s, about 2.5-3 MOA. After some reading, I decided to sort my brass by headstamp, load some rounds and head to the range. My first group with sorted brass:

Sierras in TW69 brass from the bench:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_G2iBc7a0__s/SsVVnOspQ3I/AAAAAAAAASc/VEBaZeR7Dyw/s320/DSC_5008.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387806661667275634" />

WTF? It turns out TW69 is really crappy brass made at the Twin Cities plant. During the time this brass was made, they were mostly concerned with productivity and not quality. Also, at least one of those shots on the right did not come from my rifle. Fortunately, I had also loaded some (mostly) once-fired R-P brass, and those fared much better.

Sierras in R-P brass from the bench:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_G2iBc7a0__s/SsVcPz-V7iI/AAAAAAAAASk/7meDpBUPJCE/s320/DSC_5007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387813955938151970" />

You notice there are two distinct groups. One to the upper left with 6 shots, and one around the X with 4 shots (I think there's a double). When I got home, I weighted the R-P brass I hadn't loaded and found two distinct groups:

91| 1 1 3 3
91| 7
92|
92| 8 9
93| 0 0
93| 9

key: 93| 0 = 93.0 grains
leaf unit: 0.1 grains
stem unit: 1.0 grains

What, you don't know how to read a Stem and Leaf Plot? Anyway, Some of that is once fired from the same lot, and some is range brass, but I can't tell which is which. My guess is that each kind groups pretty well, they just don't happen to group in the same place.

Now I've got my brass sorted into Lake City, Winchester, and 'Blaster.' I also weighted the Winchester and culled anything that wasn't within a grain of average. I'll let you know how they shoot when I get them loaded (daddy needs a case trimmer). Oh, and the Lapua brass should be here Saturday.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7995841.post-59905247854467588222008-07-24T17:04:00.003-04:002008-07-24T17:10:23.368-04:00AIAA now has E-books

I know this looks like spam, but it's not.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7995841.post-1118695168846732482005-06-13T16:28:00.000-04:002005-06-13T16:39:28.853-04:00Just to keep the thing goingI haven't added anything in a while, so here is a brief update.
I didn't renew my USPSA membership, so no official B-class ranking until I do. I am, however, one 60+ classifier away from B-class in production.

I am also switching to Limited for a bit. I really like the idea of Production class, but I'm tired of being penalized with minor scoreing. I'm betting it is easier to make B-class in Limited than it is in Production.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7995841.post-1094055332841025492004-09-01T13:14:00.000-04:002004-09-11T14:38:28.286-04:00Draw and Reload timesOK,
Here are some draw and reload times form a couple of practice sessions. The June times were shot to estblish a base line for measureing progress on "El Presidente." The August times are from reloading practice, shooting at 8" round plates about 11 yards away. Not exactly comparable, but at least they give an idea. It looks like I'm now about a tenth of a second faster on the draw and a quarter second faster on the reload. That's progress!
The Q is for "quartile" at in quarters. A quarter of my times were faster than Q1 and a quarter were slower than Q3. A median can also be called Q2, or the second quartile. Medians and quartiles are a good way of looking at the center and spread of small datasets. If you don't know a lot of stats, you are probably scratching your head. Still, you don't need stats to look at the table and see that all of the August times are faster than all of the June times.
